Protecting Sight #71: The generation that’s remaking China. A pressurized cataract, BAIT Syndrome, & Walden Pond. My favorite investing podcast. #ProtectingSight

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Yang Lan – The generation that’s remaking China. “Yang Lan, a journalist and entrepreneur who’s been called “the Oprah of China,” offers insight into the next generation of young Chinese citizens — urban, connected (via microblogs) and alert to injustice.” (ted.com)

This was a Ted trending talk. Yang Lan’s talk was in July 2011, and I love her prescient observations.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Complete Case: Pressurized Cataract. Superb case. Would mark this case to watch the night before or day of a complicated cataract case.

3A. Journal article – de Carlo T, Sarran R, Vajaranant TS. An African American Man With Progressive Loss of Iris Pigmentation in Both EyesJAMA Ophthalmol. Published online August 20, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.1417.

This just-posted case was on the JAMA Ophthalmology Twitter feed. Great case with excellent references (see below). I need to add these clinical findings to my EMR.

3B. Perone  JM, Chaussard  D, Hayek  G.  Bilateral acute iris transillumination (BAIT) syndrome: literature review.   Clin Ophthalmol. 2019;13:935-943. doi:10.2147/OPTH.S167449

4. Book Chapter – Walden, and On The Duty Of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. LoyalBooks.com, SparkNotes, and Gutenberg. Chapter 8.

5. (Bonus) – TIP310: MASTERMIND DISCUSSION 3Q 2020 – “On this week’s episode of The Investors Podcast, we have our mastermind discussion for the 3rd quarter of 2020. For anyone not familiar with the format, each person brings one stock pick to the table and the rest of the group tries to provide valuable feedback and risks associated with the pick. The intent of these episodes is to provide the listener with various ways to assess the strengths and weaknesses of various trade ideas.”

I discovered TIP when I was looking for podcasts back in 2017 or so. Stig and Preston have created a phenomenal show. They constantly read, learn, and share their wisdom with top tier guests each week. This episode is no different and the perfect introduction for individual investors who want to learn.

I traveled to Berkshire Hathaway and have discovered many wonderful books, podcasts, and cutting edge thinkers from listening to this show.
