Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.
Here’s today’s list:
1. Ted Talk – His Holiness Pope Francis – Our moral imperative to act on climate change — and 3 steps we can take. “The global climate crisis will require us to transform the way we act, says His Holiness Pope Francis. Delivering a visionary TED Talk from Vatican City, the spiritual leader proposes three courses of action to address the world’s growing environmental problems and economic inequalities, illustrating how all of us can work together, across faiths and societies, to protect the Earth and promote the dignity of everyone. “The future is built today,” he says. ‘And it is not built in isolation, but rather in community and in harmony.'” (ted.com)
The world is shaken by the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlights yet an even bigger challenge: the socio-environmental crisis. And this requires us, all of us, to face a choice. The choice between what matters, and what doesn’t. The choice between continuing to ignore the suffering of the poorest and to abuse our common home, our planet, or engaging at every level to transform the way we act.His Holiness Pope Francis
2A. Ike Ahmed MD – Dislocated Multifocal Lens Implant on the Retina Suture Repositioning. Great case, Ike!
2B. Cataract Surgery – Richard Mackool MD – Episode 19: Management of Bell’s Phenomenon. Dr. Mackool writes, “This month’s case features methods for dealing with the problem of a patient with a very active Bell’s Phenomenon. The use and design of my primary chopper to protect the posterior capsule during phacoemulsification, methods to remove extremely adherent lens cortex, and the creation of Penetrating Limbal Relaxing Incisions after implantation of a multifocal IOL are also discussed and demonstrated.”
I frequently watch videos by Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Mackool, and Dr. Devgan (CataractCoach.com). Each video is filled with high yield pearls.
3. Journal – Liu AJ, Friedman DS, Collins ME. Strategies to Address Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Vision Care Research. JAMA Ophthalmol. Published online October 08, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.3969
