Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.
Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk- Bill Bernat: How to connect with depressed friends. “Want to connect with a depressed friend but not sure how to relate to them? Comedian and storyteller Bill Bernat has a few suggestions. Learn some dos and don’ts for talking to people living with depression — and handle your next conversation with grace and maybe a bit of humor.” (ted.com)
This was a trending talk which includes many pearls on dealing with and relating to depression.

2. Cataract Surgery – Richard Mackool MD – Episode 20: Endothelial and Zonular Issues in a Patient with Persistent Head Movement. Dr. Mackool writes, “A very interesting case, indeed! Here we will see a patient with considerable head movement, very advanced corneal endothelial dystrophy, pseudoexfoliation, and zonular laxity that prevents nucleus rotation.”
Dr. Mackool handles this complicated case with ease. Wonderful pearls on complex cataract surgery.

3. Journal – Sathiamoorthi S, Leavitt JA, Chen JJ. Recurrent Monocular Vision Loss and an Ocular Mass. JAMA Ophthalmol. 2018;136(4):440–441. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2017.4285
Excellent case which describes transient smartphone blindness (TSB).

4. Book Chapter – The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss – Chapter 33-37. (Gutenberg | enotes).

5. Episode 94: Chamath Palihapitiya: Understanding Yourself — “Founder and CEO of Social Capital, prominent figure in the venture capital business and part owner of the Golden State Warriors, Chamath Palihapitiya sits down with Shane Parrish to chat about what it means to be an observer of the present, how to think in first principals, the psychology of successful investing, his thoughts on the best public company CEO’s and much more.”
Shane Parrish and Chamath Palihapitiya engage in a 90 minute or so episode and explore Chamath’s journeys, challenges and outlook. I especially like his pearls on happiness (see also the Ted Talk above), and his views when Shane asked him to name the best public company CEOs.
