Protecting Sight #129: A mind-shift Everest swim. Climate change, irido-capsular capture, MIGS, and the Swiss Family Robinson.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Lewis Pugh: My mind-shifting Everest swim. “After he swam the North Pole, Lewis Pugh vowed never to take another cold-water dip. Then he heard of Lake Imja in the Himalayas, created by recent glacial melting, and Lake Pumori, a body of water at an altitude of 5300 m on Everest — and so began a journey that would teach him a radical new way to approach swimming and think about climate change.” (ted.com)

And I’ve come here to ask you today: what radical tactical shift can you take in your relationship to the environment, which will ensure that our children and our grandchildren live in a safe world and a secure world, and most importantly, in a sustainable world?

Excellent talk filled with life lessons. Resilience, determination, humility, among many.

2A. Cataract Surgery – D. Brian Kim MD – Diamatrix Iris Speculum: 1st Impression. Small Fibrotic Pupil, White Cataract. Excellent case and great pearls.

2B. Alan Crandall, MD 2020 ASCRS Winning Video – New Pupil Expander Used for Capsular Bag Support. (YouTube). I watched this video a few months ago and immediately ordered samples from the manufacturer. Look forward to trying this expander in complicated cases. I had posted this video a few weeks ago and worth watching again.

3A. Journal (ASCRS/Glaukos 1 hour webinar) – iStent inject W. Excellent overview of MIGS and the new iStent inject W. Ike Ahmed MD doubles as host and stand-up comedian.

4. Book Chapter – The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss – Chapter 40-43. (Gutenberg | enotes).
