Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

1. Ted Talk – Van Jones: What if a US presidential candidate refuses to concede after an election? “If the 2020 US presidential election is close, the race could drag on in the courts and halls of Congress long after ballots are cast, says lawyer and political commentator Van Jones. Explaining why the customary concession speech is one of the most important safeguards for democracy, Jones exposes shocking legal loopholes that could enable a candidate to grab power even if they lose both the popular vote and the electoral college — and shares what ordinary citizens can do if there’s no peaceful transfer of power.” (ted.com)
2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – adherent posterior capsule plaques. Dr. Devgan writes in part,”You are doing cataract surgery for a patient with a dense nucleus, an advanced cataract, with barely count fingers vision. Once you remove the nucleus and the cortex you notice that there are plaques on the posterior capsule which are not easily removed. What is your next step? Keep trying to vacuum these opacities? Perform a primary posterior capsulorhexis? Or wait and do a YAG laser capsulotomy in a few months?”

I spent 2-3 months in Dr. Green’s Eye Pathology laboratory at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Green had a love of learning and a life filled of curiosity. Wish I had read this article back when I as a GBMC resident!
