Protecting Sight #148: Aliens & love. BSS in the pars plana, endogenous endophthalmitis, and Leonardo’s Madonna of the Yarnwinder.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – John Hodgman: Aliens, love — where are they?. “Humorist John Hodgman rambles through a new story about aliens, physics, time, space and the way all of these somehow contribute to a sweet, perfect memory of falling in love.” (ted.com)

A most enjoyable Ted Talk.

2. Uday Devgan MD – Pars Plana Injection of BSS. “Our guest surgeon, Dr Mohammad Abusamak from Jordan, is performing cataract surgery on this monocular patient who has a high degree of myopia. The anterior chamber is excessively deep and to assist, Dr Abusamak injects balanced salt solution (BSS) into the anterior vitreous via the pars plana. This extra volume helps to push the cataract anteriorly into its normal position. The case proceeds beautifully and the patient recovers excellent vision.” Well done!

3. Journal – Mir TA, Papudesu C, Fang W, Hinkle DM. Incidence of Drug Use–Related Endogenous Endophthalmitis Hospitalizations in the United States, 2003 to 2016JAMA Ophthalmol. Published online November 05, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.4741

Good data and presentation. I wonder how this study will compare in the future when looking at pre-2015 (ICD-9) vs. post-2015 (ICD-10). Also, the IRIS Registry may offer insights in the years ahead.

4. Book Chapter – Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. Chapter 20, “Florence Again.” Isaacson writes in short chapters (10-20 pages) and each filled with extraordinary details of Leonardo’s travels & artistry.
