Protecting Sight #194: Why do we kiss under mistletoe? Double flange IOL scleral fixation & a cloudy cornea. Balanced portfolio allocation & risk parity. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Carlos Reif: Why do we kiss under mistletoe?. “The sight of mistletoe may either send you scurrying or, if you have your eye on someone, awaiting an opportunity beneath its snow-white berries. But how did the festive tradition of kissing under mistletoe come about? Carlos Reif explains how this long-lived custom intertwines the mythology and biology of this intriguing plant. [Directed by Bálint Gelley, narrated by Addison Anderson, music by Gergely Buttinger].” (ted.com)

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – double flange IOL scleral fixation. Dr. Devgan writes in part, “The Yamane technique of IOL fixation to the scleral works better with certain three-piece IOLs because of the differences in haptic material. The Canabrava technique can be applied to other IOLs such as those with eyelets or in this case, by creating a small hole at the haptic-optic junction of a single-piece acrylic IOL. Our guest surgeon is Dr Hassan Khaled from Saudi Arabia is he demonstrates this technique very well.” Excellent technique.

3. Ocran C, Harmsen H, Shieh C. A Man With a Cloudy Cornea. JAMA Ophthalmol. Published online December 23, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.4646.

JAMA Ophthalmology includes excellent clinical vignettes.

4. TIP328: BALANCED PORTFOLIO ALLOCATION WITH DAMIEN BISSERIER & ALEX SHAHIDI – “In today’s episode, we sit down with Alex Shahidi and Damien Bisserier from Evoke Advisors, to discuss balanced portfolio allocation tactics used by billionaires like Ray Dalio.”

This is a very good episode on asset allocation and the pursuit of risk parity. One of the guests on this show worked at Bridgewater Associates. Founder Ray Dalio’s Principles is a must-read.

And with condolences to Mr. & Mrs. Dalio and family on the recent loss of their son.
