Protecting Sight #210: What happens in your brain when you pay attention? Extended depth of focus vs. depth of field, & vitreous opacities. John Adams’ courtship of Abigail Smith.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar: What happens in your brain when you pay attention? “Attention isn’t just about what we focus on — it’s also about what our brains filter out. By investigating patterns in the brain as people try to focus, computational neuroscientist Mehdi Ordikhani-Seyedlar hopes to build computer models that can be used to treat ADHD and help those who have lost the ability to communicate. Hear more about this exciting science in this brief, fascinating talk.” (ted.com)

Good talk. 7 minutes and I bet your mind will wander also!

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Extended Depth of Focus: Alcon Vivity. Dr. Devgan writes, “The Alcon Vivity uses a central optical zone that is beam-shaping: it changes the wavefront of these central light beams to elongate the depth of focus. This gives a wider range of good vision without glasses, with patients seeing at least 1 line better for intermediate and near when compare to a monofocal IOL.”

Excellent review of this new technology.

3. Yu S, Xu Y, Liang X. Unusual Vitreous Opacity in a Chinese PatientJAMA Ophthalmol. 2019;137(12):1454–1455. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2019.4098

JAMA Ophthalmology continues to publish excellent clinical challenges with high yield pearls.

4. David McCullough, John Adams (2001). Chapter 1, Part II, page 42-59. John Adams courtship of Abigail Adams. Very much enjoy Professor McCullough’s writing.
