Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

1. Ted Talk – Wendy De La Rosa: Why we make bad financial choices — even when we know better. “We all know we should spend less and save more, yet many of us struggle to do it and blame ourselves. Turns out, our environment is what we really need to change, and behavioral scientist Wendy De La Rosa explains why.” (ted.com)
One of the greatest life lessons I learned was to live below your means and save money when I transitioned from residency to private practice. The best book I’ve read on the importance of saving is The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy (Thomas Stanley & William Danko)
2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Descemet’s Membrane Detachment. Dr. Devgan writes, “When we make a corneal incision for cataract surgery, we must be careful to avoid damaging the attachment of Descemet’s membrane at that site. The trauma of bringing instruments in and out of the anterior chamber can cause an iatrogenic Descemet’s membrane detachment.”

4. All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things
Cleaning out the family garage and stumbled upon this book from high school! Have always loved the title and Fulghum’s list of simple life lessons. The first three are: “Share Everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people.”
5. Five Decades of Eye Pathology: Ralph C. Eagle Jr MD 83rd DeSchweinitz Memorial Lecture.
I learned about Dr. Eagle’s talk from Wills Eye Ophthalmologist-In-Chief Julia Haller’s recent email. Dr. Haller stated, “For those of you who couldn’t attend in real time, absolutely not to be missed is Dr. Ralph Eagle’s presentation of the 83rd de Schweinitz Lecture entitled “Five Decades of Eye Pathology”. A magnum opus of staggering expanse, and the most beautifully illustrated lecture I’ve ever watched. Click here to view.“
This lecture was an honor to watch.
