Protecting Sight #217: Compassion and the true meaning of empathy. Single port phaco, Akahoshi prechopper, IOL exchange, infectious scleritis, high risk uveal nevi, and more. Uncommon thoughts on common things.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Joan Halifax: Compassion and the true meaning of empathy. “Buddhist roshi Joan Halifax works with people at the last stage of life (in hospice and on death row). She shares what she’s learned about compassion in the face of death and dying, and a deep insight into the nature of empathy.” (ted.com)

This is an extraordinary talk. Filled with the power of compassion & empathy. Worth watching many times.

2A. Cataract Surgery – Dr. Sandeep Sharma – Single Port Phaco and use of Akahoshi prechopper (YouTube). I remember the great debate of whether to be a one-handed or two-handed surgeon. A nice case to watch for colleagues who only use a single port.

2B. Broken Haptic Exchange by Dr. Akahoshi (YouTube). Dr. Akahoshi is a master surgeon. Love how he handles this haptic trauma.

3A. Green Shoots on the Horizon. Tamara R. Fountain, MD, 2021 Academy President, on optimism and hope for the new year. (EyeNet January 2021).

3B. News in Review: Early Retinal Rewiring in RP Visualized, Marijuana as Tx: What Are Your Patients Thinking?, Statins, Dyslipidemia, and Dry Eye, and Low-Dose Atropine for Myopia in China. (EyeNet January 2021).

4. All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things by Robert Fulghum (page 19-33).

Cleaning out the family garage and stumbled upon this book from high school! Have always loved the title and Fulghum’s list of simple life lessons. The first three are: “Share Everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people.”

5. The Wills Eye Meet The Experts on Saturday morning was a great success. Filled with cutting edge topics. The webinar will be available on-demand on Monday. Register here.
