Protecting Sight #227: How to fix a broken education system without any more money. Cataract surgery in high myopes & cosmetic artificial iris implants.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Seema Bansal: How to fix a broken education system … without any more money. “Seema Bansal forged a path to public education reform for 15,000 schools in Haryana, India, by setting an ambitious goal: by 2020, 80 percent of children should have grade-level knowledge. She’s looking to meet this goal by seeking reforms that will work in every school without additional resources. Bansal and her team have found success using creative, straightforward techniques such as communicating with teachers using SMS group chats, and they have already measurably improved learning and engagement in Haryana’s schools.” (ted.com)

Inspiring Ted Talk. Love the SMS group chats to communicate with teachers across an entire Indian state.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – highly myopic cataract surgery. Dr. Devgan writes, “These are some of the most rewarding cataract surgeries to perform since we can correct the cataract as well as the extreme myopia at the same time. These patients are often -15 diopters, -20 diopters, or even more myopic and while they often wish for perfect distance vision, we must be careful to land on the side of mild myopia instead of mild hyperopia.” Great pearls.

3. Journal article – Ghaffari, Reza et al. Complications of Cosmetic Artificial Iris Implantation and Post Explantation Outcomes. American Journal of Ophthalmology. Published: January 22, 2021. DOI:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ajo.2021.01.005

4. All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts on Common Things by Robert Fulghum (page 128-138).
