Protecting Sight #229: How to build & rebuild trust. Vertical chop & intense simulation-based surgical education. Happy 143rd anniversary to the Yale Daily News!

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Frances Frei: How to build (and rebuild) trust. “Trust is the foundation for everything we do. But what do we do when it’s broken? In an eye-opening talk, Harvard Business School professor Frances Frei gives a crash course in trust: how to build it, maintain it and rebuild it — something she worked on during a recent stint at Uber. “If we can learn to trust one another more, we can have unprecedented human progress,” Frei says.” (ted.com)

Superb talk. Filled with life lessons and pearls.

2. Cataract Surgery – Tom Oetting MD – vertical chop in dense lens (YouTube). Dr. Oetting writes in part, “Chopping is a useful nucleofractis technique. Chopping techniques are more difficult to learn than divide and conquer as the second hand takes on a bigger role. Additionally chopping requires increased awareness of machine settings and fluidics of the anterior chamber. Chopping reduces the amount of sculpting which typically results in less ultrasound time attenuating endothelial injury. Chopping is especially safe in soft lenses and in white cataracts. Chopping may be easier on the zonules.”

Excellent demonstration of chopping techniques.

3A. Journal article – Dean WH, Gichuhi S, Buchan JC, et al.
