Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

1. Ted Talk – Olivia Arthur: Meditations on the intersection of humanity and technology. “Documentary photographer Olivia Arthur has been exploring a new frontier: the evolution of the blurring line between humanity and technology. In this meditative talk, she shows her work documenting the remarkable ways humans have merged with machines — from bionics and motorized limbs to synthetic muscles and strikingly realistic robots — and offers wisdom on the complexity, adaptability and resilience of the human body.” (ted.com)
A meditative talk, indeed.
2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – 1018: the many uses of the chopper. Dr. Devgan writes, “This complete cataract case shows how we move from the first chop to the next in order to efficiently break the nucleus into small pieces. Look at the picture above which shows the phaco probe being embedded into the nuclear half after the first chop has been accomplished. We then place the chopper to split that heminucleus into smaller pieces. Moving from one chop to the next will help you refine your phaco chop technique.”

3B. Instagram is a great social media site to view & learn from ophthalmology colleagues worldwide. Colleagues often share high quality images of rare cases. These rare diseases appeared as grainy textbook images a generation ago. (I love Twitter for cutting edge ophthalmology & medical articles).
4. The Great Mental Models Volume 1: General Thinking Concepts by Shane Parrish and Rhiannon Beaubien. 2019. “The Map is not the Territory.” I love the concepts. And especially the quotations and references.
