#ProtectingSight #398: Evolution’s counterintuitive reasoning on cute, sexy, & funny. Phaco flip & ophthalmic manifestations of Parkinson’s disease. An open invitation to CVSHealth CEO to examine Aetna patients who are being denied cataract surgery.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Dan Dennett: Cute, sexy, sweet, funny. “Why are babies cute? Why is cake sweet? Philosopher Dan Dennett has answers you wouldn’t expect, as he shares evolution’s counterintuitive reasoning on cute, sweet and sexy things (plus a new theory from Matthew Hurley on why jokes are funny).” (ted.com description)

Enjoyed the insights.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – 1166: learn the phaco flip technique. Love the complete cataract series.

3. Andrew Lee MD – Ophthalmic manifestations of Parkinson’s disease.

Dr. Lee’s neuro-ophthalmology reviews are perfect for lifelong learning.

4. Gautam Baid – The Joys of Compounding: The Passionate Pursuit of Lifelong Learning, Revised and Updated (Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing Series). Chapter 9, “Achieving Financial Independence.” Another excellent chapter which pays for the entire book.

I continue to enjoy books on value investing, lifelong learning, mental models, and more. Excellent early chapters with amazing quotations.

5. Registration Open for the #RealWorldOphthalmology meeting. Register here! (free for residents, fellows and first 10 years in practice!)

There is a social media contest also with numerous giveaways!

6. An OPEN INVITATION to CVS Health CEO, Aetna CEO & leadership teams – I have issued an open invitation to Aetna & CVSHealth CEO Karen S. Lynch to visit my office. I’ll schedule only Aetna patients who have cataracts on the day of visit.

Together, we can discuss the impact which cataracts have on a patient’s vision and quality of life. And also the impact which Aetna’s new preauthorization policy has on our most vulnerable patients.
