Welcome to my daily learning journal. My goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery each day. In addition, I plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or other piece of significant work. I started the journal on June 14, 2020.
I’ve loved this new journey, which has helped me to focus my learning each day. Since starting the journal, I’ve made a number of observations to maximize the experience.
The best place to follow my posts is via Twitter. I usually post to Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. My Instagram story includes a copy/paste of the daily journey highlight. Posts are also available via the WordPress calendar below.
- Ted Talks – I usually use the Ted Talks iPad app. I’m often drawn to trending talks, recent talks, and talks with catchy titles and images.
- Cataract Surgery videos – I rely on Uday Devgan’s CataractCoach.com, Richard Mackool’s site, and Ike Ahmed MD’s webinars and YouTube videos. Love watching YouTube videos from colleagues around the world. Every case has a pearl.
- Journal articles – I try to peruse recent journals which are gathering dust at home and work. I’m also drawn to Twitter posts from friends and colleagues. Official journal handles including Ophthalmology and JAMA Ophthalmology are excellent and often include interesting case reports.
- Book chapter – One of my biggest regrets growing up was not reading more fiction. I now want to look at Top 100 lists and start enjoying more fiction. Also drawn to good biographies (Walter Isaacson’s books are superb).
Since mid-June, I’ve enjoyed: Marcus Aurelius Meditations, The Art of War, Pride & Prejudice, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Please send me suggestions of Ted Talks, cataract surgeries, journal articles, and books.
