Protecting Sight #117: An illustrated kingdom of real, fantastical plants. Angle alpha, angle kappa, COVID in ocular tissues, and The Swiss Family Robinson.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk Nirupa Rao: An illustrated kingdom of real, fantastical plants. “Botanical artist Nirupa Rao captures the spirit and beauty of nature in watercolor. With a portfolio of enchanting, scientifically accurate illustrations, she aims to reignite our emotional connection to the environment — and open our eyes to an entire kingdom hidden in plain sight.” (ted.com)

Excellent talk and love the drawings.

The further and further we grow from nature, the more we are almost literally blind to it and the effects that our activities have on it. And that’s what it’s called — “plant blindness”: the increasing inability to really register the plants around us as living beings.

2. Uday Devgan MD – Angle Alpha and Angle Kappa with IOLs. Dr. Devgan writes in part, “Angle Alpha and Angle Kappa are important considerations with IOLs that have diffractive rings such as trifocal, bifocal, multi-focal, and some extended depth of field (EDOF) designs. This video explains the concepts in detail and can serve as a guide to patient selection for the best optical results.” Superb video and review.

3. Journal – Yan Y, Diao B, Liu Y, Zhang W, Wang G, Chen X. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Nucleocapsid Protein in the Ocular Tissues of a Patient Previously Infected With Coronavirus Disease 2019JAMA Ophthalmol. Published online October 08, 2020. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.3962

4. Book Chapter – The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss – Chapter 2. (Gutenberg | enotes)
