Protecting Sight #134: The first glacier lost to climate change. Incisional techniques for astigmatism and bleeding under a LASIK flap. The Vitruvian Man and the art of hostage negotiations.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Andri Snær Magnason: On time and water. “Over the next 200 years, we can expect all of the Earth’s glaciers to disappear — unless we act now, says writer Andri Snær Magnason. Telling the story of the Okjökull glacier in Iceland, the first glacier lost to climate change, Magnason explains why we need to start connecting to the future in a more intimate, urgent way in order to stabilize the Earth for generations to come.” (ted.com)

Remarkable images and insights in this 4-minute Ted Talk.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Incisional Techniques for Astigmatism. Dr. Devgan writes, “Cataract surgery can be our most powerful refractive surgery procedure, correcting high degrees of myopia, hyperopia, and even astigmatism (with toric IOLs). But what about smaller degrees of corneal astigmatism of less than 1 diopter? This video reviews the best techniques to achieve excellent visual outcomes with refractive cataract surgery.” 5 minute overview (also worth watching many times!)

3A. Ophthalmology and “Rubber Bullets” Anne L. Coleman, George A. Williams, David W. Parke II. Published online: August 04, 2020. Ophthalmology, October 2020, p1287-1288.

4. Book Chapter – Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. Chapter 8, “Vitruvian Man.” A masterful chapter and explanation on Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man.”

5. TIP320: BUSINESS NEGOTIATIONS W/ FORMER FBI AGENT CHRIS VOSS. Recorded | 24 October 2020. “On today’s show we have former FBI agent, Chris Voss, to talk to us about negotiations. Chris spent 24 years in the FBI’s Crisis negotiation unit and is now an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.”

Superb episode which is worth listening to many times. The art of negotiation from a hostage negotiator has pearls which apply to everyday life.
