Protecting Sight #135: The genius of the London Tube Map & Leonardo’s Horse Monument. White cataracts & granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA).

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Michael Bierut: The genius of the London Tube Map. “Design legend Michael Bierut tells the story of the accidental success of one of the most famous maps in the world — the London Tube Map.” (ted.com)

I love maps! And especially the London Underground map and the old London A-Z. I used to travel in wonderment of 5+centuries of history in central London. This 3-minute Ted Talks includes a remarkable story of the history of London’s tube map.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Not all white cataracts are the same. Dr. Devgan writes in part, “All white cataracts are not the same. They can run the spectrum from soft to very dense, with a variable degree of cortical liquefaction, and presence or absence of confounding issues.” Excellent review.

3. Cossack M, Vanam S, Wallace B. Vision Loss With Pachymeningeal Enhancement on Magnetic Resonance Imaging. JAMA Ophthalmol. 2017;135(5):495–496. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2016.4542

Recto: Studies for casting apparatus, and miscellaneous notes. Verso: Further casting studies, and lines of poetry
Studies for casting an equestrian monument (Royal Collection Trust)

4. Book Chapter – Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. Chapter 9, “The Horse Monument.”
