Protecting Sight #231: The secret of enduring love. Capsular tension rings, ophthalmology homeless shelter clinics, & The Iliad.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Alec Soth and Stacey Baker: This is what enduring love looks like. “Stacey Baker has always been obsessed with how couples meet. When she asked photographer Alec Soth to help her explore this topic, they found themselves at the world’s largest speed-dating event, held in Las Vegas on Valentine’s Day, and at the largest retirement community in Nevada — with Soth taking portraits of pairs in each locale. Between these two extremes, they unwound a beautiful through-line of how a couple goes from meeting to creating a life together.” (ted.com)

Ted Talks come in 2 versions – pretty good and wonderful. This wonderful Ted Talk will touch the soul.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Capsular Tension Ring Placement. Dr. Devgan writes in part, “Our guest surgeon is Dr. Bhagyashri Deshmukh from Amravati, India and she is presenting a traumatic cataract case with a significant degree of zonular loss. A capsular tension ring is carefully placed prior to beginning phacoemulsification of the cataract. What is the optimal time for placement of a CTR? Is there an advantage to placing it earlier in the case? What are the challenges with this?”

3. Journal article – Hennein L, de Alba Campomanes AG. Association of a Health Coaching and Transportation Assistance Intervention at a Free Ophthalmology Homeless Shelter Clinic With Follow-up RatesJAMA Ophthalmol. Published online January 28, 2021. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.6373.
