Protecting Sight #247: The paradigm shift toward equitable tech access across Africa. Phaco flip, PXF, posterior polar cataract, junctional scotoma of Traquair, and effortless meditation.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – ‘Gbenga Sesan: The paradigm shift toward equitable tech access across Africa. “Centuries of inequality can’t be solved with access to technology alone — we need to connect people with training and support too, says tech inclusionist ‘Gbenga Sesan. Sharing the work behind the Paradigm Initiative, a social enterprise in Nigeria that’s empowering young people with digital resources and skills, Sesan details a vision for creating life-changing opportunities for generations of people across Africa.”

A remarkable Ted Talk & worth watching twice.

2A. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – 1015: phaco flip + chop in pseudo-exfoliation. Great technique.

Post Polar Challa

2B. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Video Review: Posterior Polar Cataract Bowl Technique. Novel technique.

3A. Andrew Lee MD – Junctional scotoma Traquair & Junctional scotoma.

3B. Junctional Scotoma and Junctional scotoma of Traquair (EyeWiki)

3C. Grzybowski, A. (2009), Harry Moss Traquair (1875–1954), Scottish ophthalmologist and perimetrist. Acta Ophthalmologica, 87: 455-459. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1755-3768.2008.01286.x

Dr. Lee’s two-four minute reviews are filled with ophthalmology pearls. I often enjoy reading about the names behind conditions, which (since medical school) helps me to remember diseases. Dr. Traquair led an extraordinary life and I hope to one day stumble upon his 1927 book.

4. Episode 103: Loch Kelly: Effortless Mindfulness— “Loch Kelly is an author, meditation teacher, psychotherapist, and founder of the Open-Hearted Awareness Institute. Shane and Loch do a deep dive into mindfulness, consciousness, how to not let your emotions take over, ways to access your hidden awareness, debugging your mind and so much more.” Good episode & worth a listen.
