I look forward to joining colleagues at the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s AAO 2026 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, where I will co-chair a symposium exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence, data, health policy, and physician advocacy.
SYM49: Artificial Intelligence, Data, and Health Policy: Driving Equity and Advocacy in Ophthalmology will bring together leaders in ophthalmology, medicine, and health technology to discuss how emerging technologies and evolving health policies are shaping the future of patient care.
The symposium will explore opportunities to harness AI and data to improve clinical outcomes, expand access to care, advance health equity, and strengthen ophthalmology’s voice in health policy.
I’m pleased to co-chair the session with Lisa Nijm, MD, JD, and Mildred Olivier, MD, alongside an outstanding faculty that includes Grayson Armstrong, MD, MPH; Joseph Nezgoda, MD, MBA; Pearse Keane, MBBCH; Michael Levitt; Daniel Shu Wei Ting, MD, PhD; and John Whyte, MD, MPH.
The symposium is cosponsored by the American Medical Association (AMA) Ophthalmology Section Council, reflecting our shared commitment to advancing evidence-based policy and physician leadership.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into medicine, ophthalmologists have an important opportunity to help shape how these technologies are developed, evaluated, and implemented.
