Protecting Sight #75: The art of asking. An extraordinary Ted Talk. An anterior capsular rip, choroidal detachment, & the Brute Neighbors at Walden Pond

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Amanda Palmer. The art of asking. “Don’t make people pay for music, says Amanda Palmer: Let them. In a passionate talk that begins in her days as a street performer (drop a dollar in the hat for the Eight-Foot Bride!), she examines the new relationship between artist and fan.” (

Amanda Palmer is an extraordinary storyteller. Her talk is filled with life lessons & poignant observations. Have a box of tissues handy. This is one of the top 5 of the 75 Ted Talks I’ve watched since June.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Cataract Quiz: Why did the capsule rip? Great save, Uday & anonymous resident.

Images of the left eye at baseline. A, Midphase fluorescein angiography of the left eye. There are multiple peripheral areas of punctate hyperfluorescence. Leakage is more pronounced posteriorly around the nerve. There is scattered blockage of background fluorescence owing to retinal pigment epithelium mottling, which creates a leopard-spot pattern. A retinal detachment is seen inferiorly with tortuous vessels and nonfluorescent subretinal fluid. B, A B-scan ultrasonographic image of the left eye in the longitudinal 6 o’clock meridian demonstrates retinal detachment and a nonserous choroidal detachment superiorly. The optic nerve shadow is seen inferiorly. There is no fluid in the Tenon capsule. The detachment was mapped to extend from 1:30 to 10:00 o’clock and involve the macula. The maximum height of the choroidal detachment was 3.4 mm. No retinal tear was visualized.

3. Journal article – Intermittent Temporal Visual Field Loss in a Middle-aged Man. Hasenin Al-Khersan, MD; Natalia Villate, MD; Janet L. Davis, MD September 1, 2019. JAMA Ophthalmology Clinical Challenge

4. Book Chapter – Walden, and On The Duty Of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau., SparkNotes, and Gutenberg. Chapter 12.

Have considered abandoning Walden in the last few days, and renewed to continue with the video reflection below.
