It was a pleasure to recently speak virtually with the ophthalmology residents at Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires in Argentina about cataract surgery pearls and surgical technique.
The invitation came from Juan Segundo Gilardenghi, MD, Chief Resident in Ophthalmology, whom I had the opportunity to meet during the IIRSI Conference in Chennai earlier this summer. One of the great benefits of international ophthalmology meetings is that conversations begun halfway around the world can lead to new opportunities for education and collaboration.
Our discussion focused on practical lessons from the operating room—approaching cataract surgery efficiently and safely, anticipating challenges, managing complications, and developing the surgical judgment that comes with experience.
I particularly enjoyed the residents’ thoughtful questions and enthusiasm. Teaching across borders is also a reminder that, despite differences in health systems and geography, ophthalmologists share the same goal: continually improving our skills to provide better care for our patients.
