Protecting Sight #77: The brain benefits of deep sleep. Saturdays with Ike.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Dan Gartenberg – The brain benefits of deep sleep — and how to get more of it – “There’s nothing quite like a good night’s sleep. What if technology could help us get more out of it? Dan Gartenberg is working on tech that stimulates deep sleep, the most regenerative stage which (among other wonderful things) might help us consolidate our memories and form our personalities. Find out more about how playing sounds that mirror brain waves during this stage might lead to deeper sleep — and its potential benefits on our health, memory and ability to learn.” (ted.com)

Poor sleep was a “badge of honor” in high school, college, medical school, and residency training. I love this idea and look forward to day when a device can help augment deep sleep and memory.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Toric IOL for Posterior Polar Cataracts? Great case.

3. Journal article – John P. Whitcher, Caroline H. Shiboski, Stephen C. Shiboski, Ana Maria Heidenreich, Kazuko Kitagawa, Shunhua Zhang, Steffen Hamann, Genevieve Larkin, et al. A Simplified Quantitative Method for Assessing Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca From the Sjögren’s Syndrome International Registry. American Journal of Ophthalmology, March 2010. Vol. 149, Issue 3, p405–415.

4. Book Chapter – Walden, and On The Duty Of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. LoyalBooks.com, SparkNotes, and Gutenberg. Chapter 14-15.

Looking forward to my next book. Please tweet me suggestions!

5. (BONUS) – My Saturday mornings often begin with Ike Ahmed’s Prism Eye Rounds. Today’s talk was Ike’s “Ask me anything” and he shared many life lessons.

Ike mentioned that I had texted him (on September 6, 2019) and suggested he record his fellows teaching sessions and post as a webinar. The Prism Eye Rounds has been the silver lining of social distancing and webinar learning.
