Protecting Sight #214: Get ready for hybrid thinking. Akahoshi pre-chopper, a lost glaucoma tube, & a 4-year-old with earache and double vision. Join us for the Wills Eye Meet-The-Experts webinar.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Ray Kurzweil: Get ready for hybrid thinking. “Two hundred million years ago, our mammal ancestors developed a new brain feature: the neocortex. This stamp-sized piece of tissue (wrapped around a brain the size of a walnut) is the key to what humanity has become. Now, futurist Ray Kurzweil suggests, we should get ready for the next big leap in brain power, as we tap into the computing power in the cloud.” (ted.com)

Worth a watch. Excellent concepts.

2A. Cataract Surgery – Dr. Neto Rosatelli – Phaco Clip #8 – Akahoshi Prechopper. Nice case.

2B. MICS Akahoshi Technology Update 2013 – Superb technique on a white cataract.

2C. AAO 1-minute videos: Glaucoma Tube Lost and Found. “Drs. Riley Sanders and Ahmed Sallam demonstrate a case in which the tube of an Ahmed glaucoma drainage device becomes dislocated from the eye during pars plans vitrectomy for retinal detachment. This video details the steps taken to rectify the situation.”
