Protecting Sight #218: A mother and son’s photographic journey through dementia. Cataract, cornea transplant, & glaucoma tube in one case. Orbital tumors, hydroxychloroquine, vein occlusions, and dementia. John Adams visits Philadelphia.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Tony Luciani: A mother and son’s photographic journey through dementia“Artist Tony Luciani was testing out a new camera when his 91-year-old mother, Elia, snuck into the background of his photos. The spontaneous images that resulted sparked a years-long collaboration, with Luciani documenting his mom’s life and spirit as she lived with dementia. In this touching talk, he shares the stories behind some of their favorite shots, capturing the joy and grief of caring for an aging parent.” (ted.com)

I loved this talk. Filled with love, compassion, empathy and life lessons. Have a box of tissues ready and prepare to be inspired.

2A. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – Cataract, cornea transplant, glaucoma tube. Dr. Devgan writes in part, “Our guest surgeon is Guillermo Amescua MD who is a faculty member at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. He is an expert in complex anterior segment reconstruction and he uses those skills to help restore vision for this patient with rhemuatoid arthritis related corneal disease, glaucoma, and a dense cataract.”

A superb case filled with pearls.

2B. Dr. Neto Rosatelli – Phaco Clip #121 – White Suspicion – Dr. Rosatelli writes, “Zonular compromise suspicion on a white traumatic cataract demands a very careful and consistent approach.”

Excellent case.

3. MIS for Orbital Tumors, Link Between RVO and Dementia, and More. Our editors summarize the most exciting studies from Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Retina, American Journal of Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, and other journals. (EyeNet January 2021).

4B. David McCullough, John Adams (2001). Chapter 2, Part I. John Adams arrives in Philadelphia. Love the detail of the American colonies’ largest city.

5. Episode 100: Matt Mullenweg: Collaboration Is Key — “Matt Mullenweg is the co-founder of WordPress, the open platform that runs most of the sites you visit and the CEO of Automattic. In this episode Matt and Shane discuss distributed work, the 5 levels of autonomous organizations, decision making, running an organization with more than 1300 people, integrating acquisitions and so much more.”

The Knowledge Project is a favorite podcast for a weekend drive. Filled with insights.
