Protecting Sight #271: Keeping a diary supports personal development. Surgeon control & vitamins in neuro-ophthalmology. The new American Dream & becoming indispensable.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Stefan Sagmeister: Things I’ve learned in my life so far. “Rockstar designer Stefan Sagmeister delivers a short, witty talk on life lessons, expressed through surprising modes of design (including … inflatable monkeys?).” (ted.com)

The sub-5 minute Ted talks are often filled with images, pearls, and life lessons.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – 1039: complete case: surgeon control.

Excellent technique and pearls.

3. Andrew Lee MD – Vitamins in Neuro-Ophthalmology.

Dr. Lee’s neuro-ophthalmology reviews are around 5 minutes and filled with high-yield pearls.

4. Seth Godin, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? “Thinking About Your Choice.”

I love Godin’s comment about the old American Dream — which I wrote about in a high school essay — and the New American Dream.

Godin writes of the New American Dream:

Be remarkable

Be generous

Create art

Make judgment calls

Connect people and ideas

I generally do not write or make notes in books. If I did, I would highlight almost every page of this book.
