Protecting Sight #283: The difference between winning and succeeding. Upside down IOL & posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES). Infinite innovation vs. invention.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, podcast, or significant work.

Here is today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – John Wooden: The difference between winning and succeeding. “With profound simplicity, Coach John Wooden redefines success and urges us all to pursue the best in ourselves. In this inspiring talk he shares the advice he gave his players at UCLA, quotes poetry and remembers his father’s wisdom.” (ted.com)

Timeless wisdom in this extraordinary Ted Talk.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD – 1051: Fixing the Upside Down IOL. Nice save.

3. Andrew Lee MD – Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES).

Dr. Lee’s 450+ neuro-ophthalmology reviews are around 5 minutes each. Perfect for the busy clinician & trainee. I plan to watch one a day, from oldest to newest.

4. Episode 107: Matt Ridley: Infinite Innovation— “Matt Ridley is the author of several books related to science and human progress including the Red Queen and How Innovation Works. He’s also a biologist, newspaper columnist and member of the House of Lords in the UK. Matt and Shane discuss writing books about science, the age-old battle between viruses and humans, rational optimism, the difference between innovation and invention, the role of trial and error and the effects of social media on seeing others’ points of view.”

Enjoyable episode. Loved the examples of innovation including the story of the Wright Brothers.
