I recently had the privilege of presenting a talk on Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS).
In my talk, I shared the evolution of femtosecond technology, its benefits in precision, safety, and workflow efficiency, and how innovations such as the ALLY dual-pulse platform are shaping the future of cataract surgery.

To bring the discussion to life, I shared an 8-minute surgical video demonstrating the workflow of an actual case. I also presented two cataract surgeries in a split-screen format, offering fast-paced, side-by-side learning. This approach allowed colleagues to appreciate the real-time advantages of FLACS, including surgical precision, astigmatism correction, and improved patient outcomes.
Femtosecond laser platforms continue to provide:
- Enhanced reproducibility in capsulotomy
- Reduced phaco energy and endothelial cell loss
- Improved toric IOL alignment with iris registration
- Efficiency gains in the operating room
As with many innovations, long-term studies show comparable outcomes to traditional phacoemulsification — but in select cases, FLACS offers distinct advantages that can make a meaningful difference for both surgeon and patient.

👁️ As a past president of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, I am grateful for the opportunity to share insights and engage in thoughtful discussions with colleagues on how technology is transforming cataract surgery.
