Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.
Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – Seth Berkley M.D. – The troubling reason why vaccines are made too late … if they’re made at all (2015). “It seems like we wait for a disastrous disease outbreak before we get serious about making a vaccine for it. Seth Berkley lays out the market realities and unbalanced risks behind why we aren’t making vaccines for the world’s biggest diseases.” (ted.com)
Many of life’s greatest challenges were predicted by a Ted Talk.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD –Climbing up the surgical skill bell curve. Life lessons. The bell curve is just as important twenty years post-residency!

3A. Journal article – Statler B, Srivastava SK, Singh RP. Bilateral Central Scotoma in a Middle-aged Man. JAMA Ophthalmol. 2020;138(8):911–912. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.0753 (The print journal includes the answer as part of the question).

3B. Kisilevsky E, Yu E, Margolin E. Asymptomatic Papilledema in a 64-Year-Old Man. JAMA Ophthalmol. 2020;138(8):913–914. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.0875

3C. Ma J, Micieli JA. Severe Vision Loss in a Man With Heavy Tobacco and Alcohol Consumption. JAMA Ophthalmol. 2020;138(8):915–916. doi:10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2020.0900

4. Book Chapter – Walden, and On The Duty Of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. LoyalBooks.com, SparkNotes, and Gutenberg. Chapter 1, Part III. (The Apple podcast divides up Chapter 1 into 40-60 minute episodes).

5. Bonus – Please join us on Saturday August 15 for the International Council of Ophthalmology Webinar! The ICO launches the World Ophthalmology Leaders Program! (The time difference from New York to India is 9.5 hours. So timing for the Saturday session is 8:30 am EST – 12:30 pm EST. IST times in flyer)
