Protecting Sight #65: The nerd’s guide to learning everything online.

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list:

1. Ted Talk – John Green – The nerd’s guide to learning everything online (November 2010) “Some of us learn best in the classroom, and some of us … well, we don’t. But we still love to learn — we just need to find the way that works for us. In this charming, personal talk, author John Green shares the community of learning that he found in online video.” (ted.com)

An enjoyable talk. I have found many great learning communities, including YouTube, Twitter, and Ted! And a shout-out to ophthalmology colleagues who have created learning communities across the social media space.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD Resident Case: improve horizontal chop (UK registrar). Great pearls.

3. Journal article – Dysphotopsia after Temporal versus Superior Laser Peripheral Iridotomy: A Prospective Randomized Paired Eye Trial. Vanessa Vera, Abdulla Naqi, Graham W. Belovay, Devesh K. Varma, Iqbal Ike K. Ahmed. AJO. Volume 157, Issue 5, P929-935.E2, May 01, 2014.

An interesting case of dysphotopsia from Yag PI was presented by Shakeel Shareef, MD on this weekend’s Prism Webinar with Ike Ahmed MD. Guest panelists included Ike and Vanessa Vera, MD, the first author on the 2014 paper. Check out the case on YouTube.

4. Book Chapter – Walden, and On The Duty Of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. LoyalBooks.com, SparkNotes, and Gutenberg. Chapter 2, Part I. Still miss Tom and Huck.
