Protecting Sight #70: 7 beliefs that can silence women. #WomenInOphthalmology #WIO2020 #HeForShe #ProtectingSight

Welcome to my daily learning journal. My daily goal is to watch one Ted Talk and one cataract surgery. I also plan to read one journal article and read/listen to a book chapter, short story or significant work.

Here’s today’s list (with a shout-out to friends & colleagues attending the 2020 Women in Ophthalmology virtual meeting. Still waiting for my invite, President Shriver & CEO Nijm!):

1. Ted Talk – Deepa Narayan – 7 beliefs that can silence women — and how to unlearn them. “In India (and many other countries), girls and women still find themselves silenced by traditional rules of politeness and restraint, says social scientist Deepa Narayan. In this frank talk, she identifies seven deeply entrenched norms that reinforce inequality — and calls on men to help usher in change.” (ted.com)

Have a box of tissues handy. A powerful Ted Talk filled with situations I’ve witnessed in the US and India.

2. Cataract Surgery – Uday Devgan MD with Guest Surgeon Nicole Fram MD – Femto & Capsular Tension Segments. Will watch this case many times. Filled with pearls on handling a dense cataract & loose zonules.

3. Journal article – Maxitrol‐induced corneal melts after routine cataract surgery in rheumatology patients. David Lockington FRCOphth, Rishi Sharma FRCOphth, Sanjay Mantry FRCOphth, Kanna Ramaesh FRCOphth. First published: 03 July 2014 https://doi.org/10.1111/ceo.12382

Corneal melts were discussed on today’s Prism webinar (see #5 below).

4. Book Chapter – Walden, and On The Duty Of Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. LoyalBooks.com, SparkNotes, and Gutenberg. Chapter 6-7.

When do you decide a book isn’t for you? It’s hard to listen to Thoreau after works by Austen, Melville, and Twain.

5. (Bonus) – Ike Ahmed MD – Prism Eye Rounds – Ike called me out for being 53 minutes late to his weekly webinar. I forgive this manel & assume all female colleagues were attending #WIO2020.

Superb cases and, with CataractCoach, the best free ophthalmology content on the internet.

Congratulations to friends & colleagues attending the #WIO2020 meeting!
